BINGHAMTON M2
Fall 2012 | Binghamton, NY | Cornell University
Professor Vincent Mulcahy
Binghamton M2 (museum and mediatheque) is a proposal for a large scale public institution in downtown Binghamton, New York. The building concept, a cube within a cube, reflects the nested condition of the city, sited in the middle of three hills. Museum visitors circulate upwards around the cube, where they enter exhibition halls that frame views and major landmarks around the city. Suspended in the center of the cube is a large performance hall facing a river. A raised landscape and public plaza form the ground condition of the site, and exterior skins project movies and videos that showcase Binghamton’s filmmaking history. The M2 constructs a sequential and phenomenological experience that showcases the city’s history and ongoing activities.
