UNIVERCITY BUFFALO
Fall 2015 | Buffalo, NY | Cornell University
Professor Michael Jefferson and Greg Keefe
Due to the introduction of interstate highways, the Main Street of Buffalo, NY lost its commercial prominence and became the back alley to the city. Mismatched street grids, created during different eras, made it difficult to travel across an obsolete Main Street, exacerbating economic and racial divides between East and West Buffalo. Univercity is a radical strategy to “re-stitch” Main Street through the downtown expansion of University of Buffalo. Using academic programs as vessels, the strategy improves connectivity across East and West Buffalo through a series of lateral interventions - pedestrian bridges, classroom villages, urban farms, and traffic roundabouts, among others. Each intervention relates to an academic subject, such as medicine and athletics, which educates students while improving the neighborhood. Driving along Main Street/Univercity allow students to experience a linear section of the traditional academic campus.
